Vietnam veterans honored across Michigan on March 29

A host of veteran-focused events in Michigan – from a Vietnam War Traveling Wall in Battle Creek to a Veteran Entrepreneurship Expo in Ann Arbor – will take place March 29 on National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

The special day was established by the president in 2017 to ensure the sacrifices of the 9 million U.S. service members who served during the Vietnam era are remembered for generations to come. This national salute is part of a 13-year commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War that began in 2012.

Michigan is home to about 217,000 surviving Vietnam veterans, representing 36 percent of the state’s veteran population – the largest contingent of any service period, according to the latest available data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, the state’s central coordinating agency for veterans, along with County Veteran Service offices and Veteran Service Organizations, are working together to recognize all Vietnam veterans for their service and connect them with the benefits they earned. The Michigan Veterans Resource Service Center, at 1-800-MICH-VET, is available 24/7 to help veterans connect with benefits and with other issues facing veterans and their families.
